Cachi is the classic Calchaquí Valleys village: white adobe houses, quiet streets and a square framed by the Church of San José, with the snow-capped Nevado de Cachi behind it.
The road in
Getting there is half the experience. From Salta, Route 33 climbs through the green gorge of the Cuesta del Obispo to the Piedra del Molino pass, then crosses Los Cardones National Park, where the long straight of the Recta de Tin Tin runs between thousands of giant cardón cacti.
In town
The Archaeological Museum on the square gives context to the valley’s long pre-Hispanic history. Otherwise, Cachi is a place to slow down — a walk to the cemetery viewpoint at sunset, an unhurried dinner, an early night.
