The Northwest has a clear rhythm: a dry season from roughly April to November, and a wet season from December to March, when most of the year’s rain falls in afternoon storms.
April to November: the dry season
Skies are clear and mountain roads are generally in good condition. Days are sunny and mild, but nights at altitude are cold, especially from June to August. This is the most reliable time for the Puna and Salinas Grandes.
December to March: the wet season
The valleys turn green and the light is dramatic, but storms can cause landslides and river crossings that close mountain roads for hours or days. Keep plans flexible and check road conditions locally.
Festivals
Carnival in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (February or March) is one of the great celebrations of the Andes. On 1 August, communities across the region honour the Pachamama, Mother Earth.
